Kyokuroku -

A type of chair used primarily by Buddhist monks. It is characterized by a curved top rail on the back, or a single curved rod connecting the back and armrests. The word "kyakuko" is an abbreviation of "kyakukoboku," where kyaku means to carve wood, so it refers to a chair with curves carved from wood. It was introduced from China during the Kamakura period and was first used in Zen temples, but later came to be used by other sects and the general public. It was especially popular during the Momoyama period.

主として僧侶(そうりょ)が使う椅子(いす)の一種。背もたれの笠木(かさぎ)が曲線を描いているか、または背もたれと肘掛(ひじか)けとが曲線を描いた1本の棒でつながっているのが特徴である。曲彔ということばは曲彔木の略で、彔は木を削(はつ)る（そぎ落とす）の意であるから、木を削って曲線をつくった椅子ということになる。鎌倉時代に中国から渡来したもので、最初は禅林で用いられたが、のちには他の宗派でも、また一般でも使うようになった。とくに桃山時代には大流行した。
