Egg cockle (cockle)

An edible bivalve mollusk of the family Mallidae (illustration). The shell reaches a length of 9.5 cm, a height of 9.5 cm, and a width of 6.5 cm. The shell is thin, round, and well inflated. When young, it has a pale pink arrowhead pattern, but as it matures, the apex of the shell is red and becomes paler toward the ventral edge, and a soft, pale yellowish brown shell skin grows along 40 to 50 thin, shallow radial grooves. The inner surface is pale pink to reddish purple. At the occlusion, there are small fang-like teeth below the apex of the shell, and long, plate-like lateral teeth at the anterior and posterior edges. The soft body's foot is long and black-purple, and is bent inside the shell.

ザルガイ科の食用二枚貝（イラスト）。殻の長さ9.5cm，高さ9.5cm，幅6.5cmに達する。殻は薄く丸くよく膨らむ。幼貝では淡紅色の矢絣模様があるが，成長すると殻頂が紅色で腹縁へ向かって淡色になり，淡黄褐色の軟らかい殻皮が40～50条の細く浅い放射溝に沿って生える。内面は淡紅色から紅紫色である。かみ合せには殻頂の下に小さいきば状の歯があり，前･後縁に板状の長い側歯がある。軟体の足は黒紫色で長くて殻の中では折れ曲がっている。
