An old town in the northern part of the Echigo Plain, Kitakanbara District, Niigata Prefecture. The main settlement, which is on the Uetsu Main Line, became a government territory in the mid-modern period and had a magistrate's office established there. It developed as a market town and was a commercial center in the grain-producing region. In recent years it has become a residential satellite town of Niigata City. It is home to Lake Hyo (a natural monument) famous for its swans. In April 2004, it merged with Yasuda Town, Kyogase Village, and Sasagami Village in Kitakanbara District to form Agano City. 38.75 km2 . Population 20,818 (2003). 新潟県北蒲原(きたかんばら)郡,越後平野北部にある旧町。羽越(うえつ)本線が通じる主集落は近世中期以降天領となり代官所が置かれ,市場町としても発達,穀倉地帯の商業の一中心をなす。近年は新潟市の住宅衛星都市となっている。ハクチョウで有名な瓢(ひょう)湖(天然記念物)がある。2004年4月北蒲原郡安田町,京ヶ瀬村,笹神村と合併し,阿賀野市となる。38.75km2。2万818人(2003)。
