...She was the daughter of a wealthy Parisian bourgeoisie, and started out as a model before entering the film industry. The image of Bebe as a carefree woman with bare bottom, a free-spirited woman with unwashed blonde hair flowing down her shoulders and back, striding barefoot in the sun with her body unashamedly exposed, an innocent villain in whom seductress and child, or immorality and innocence, were created by her husband, Roger Vadim (1928- ), who was still a total novice director at the time, and Raoul Lévy (1922-66), a producer who sensed the breath of a new era and was ahead of the New Wave, and who had brunette Bebe dye her hair blonde, following the example of Marilyn Monroe's success with blonde hair, and took the risk of depicting the body and sex on a full-screen color CinemaScope screen, shocking the world. Just as Vadim proudly declared, "Bebe does not act, Bebe exists," the appearance of Brigitte Bardot overturned the tradition of the "performing actress" in French cinema, proving that physical presence is the most important element in captivating the screen. (Before Bebe, there was Martine Carol, who was called the "nude actress," but even when she was completely naked, she was still expected to "act" and was called a bad actress.)
