Botanist. Born in Inao Village, Yamagata Prefecture (now Tsuruoka City). Graduated from the College of Agriculture of the Imperial University in 1891 (Meiji 24), he worked at the Agricultural Experiment Station of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, where he was involved in rice cultivation research. In 1903 (Meiji 36), he moved to the Kinai branch, where he succeeded in creating hybrids through artificial crossbreeding of rice with Ando Kotaro, and was a pioneer in introducing Mendelian genetics to rice breeding. He also compared rice varieties and organized them into 60 varieties, laying the foundations of rice breeding. He received his doctorate in agriculture in 1919 (Taisho 8), and became a professor at Kyushu Imperial University in 1921. After comparing Japanese rice with foreign rice, he proposed dividing the world's rice into two major types, indica and japonica, which was widely recognized. From 1932 (Showa 7), he held the position of professor at Tokyo University of Agriculture.
