Toyozou Arakawa

Ceramicist. Born on March 17, 1894, to Yozaemon Kato, a potter who made his living in Kujiri, Izumimura, Gifu Prefecture (now Toki City). As a boy, he became an apprentice to a merchant for a time, but in 1919 (Taisho 8) he met the famous Kyoto potter Miyanaga Tozan (1868-1941) and began to study pottery in earnest. He made great strides as a potter after being invited to work at Kamakura Hosigaoka Kiln, run by Kitaoji Rosanjin, in 1927 (Showa 2). In 1930, he discovered a famous kiln for Shino ware from the Momoyama period in his hometown of Ogaya, Kani City, Gifu Prefecture, and built an old-style half-hole kiln there, devoting himself to the production of Koshino and Setoguro wares. He devoted his talents to reviving Mino ware from the Momoyama period in the modern era, and became one of the leading contemporary tea ceremony ceramic artists. As a result of his work, he was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property in 1955 (Showa 30), and was awarded the Order of Culture in 1971. He passed away on August 11, 1985.
