Kenya Miura

Japanese:
Kenya Miura

A potter from Edo in the late Edo period to the Meiji era. His childhood name was Totaro. He learned pottery from his uncle Ida Kichiroku, who was the first to receive the honor of "sekiyaki" in front of the shogun. He was also taught the pottery techniques of Ogata Kenzan by Nishimura Myakuan, and took the name of the 6th Kenzan and the name Tenrokudo. He also learned painting from Tani Buncho and lacquer-e from Kanjiro, and devised a decorative method of inlaying pottery into lacquerware following the legacy of Ogawa Haritsu. In addition to this elaborate hakasa craft, he was skilled in a wide range of works, including elegant painted pottery modeled after Kenzan, sculpture, and accessories (Kai Yadama). In 1875 (Meiji 8), he moved from Fukagawa to Chomyoji Temple in Mukojima, where he spent his later years, but he also built kilns in Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and Hanno, Saitama Prefecture, and opened a shipyard in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, and was the first person to fire glass in Tokyo, making him a talented man of the Westernization period. One of his representative works is the "Goose Plaque" (Tokyo National Museum).
