Japanese: 細胞周期 - さいぼうしゅうき（英語表記）cell cycle

This is the cycle in which a cell that has completed division undergoes cell division until the next cell division. It is also called the mitotic cycle. For convenience, the cell cycle is divided into four periods. After the mitotic phase (M phase) in which cell division occurs, the cell goes through the first interphase ( _G1 phase), the DNA synthesis phase (S phase) in which DNA is replicated, and the cell goes through the second interphase ( _G2 phase) before entering the next cell division phase. The duration of each of these phases varies depending on the type of cell and the environmental conditions. In cells in the early stages of development, the cell cycle is short, with almost no _G1 or _G2 phases, whereas in mature cells, the _G1 phase is usually very long.

分裂を終えた細胞が次に細胞分裂するまでの1周期。分裂周期とも呼ばれる。細胞周期は便宜上4つの期間に分けられており，細胞分裂が起こる分裂期 (M期) の後，第1間期 (G₁期) を経て DNA合成期 (S期) で DNAが複製され，第2間期 (G₂期) を経て次の分裂期を迎える。これらの各期の時間は細胞の種類や環境条件により異なる。発生初期の細胞では，細胞周期が短く，G₁期，G₂期がほとんどないのに対し，成長した細胞では，G₁期が非常に長いのが普通である。
