lukovitsa

Japanese: lukovitsa
lukovitsa

...One of the most distinctive features of the Russian dome is the unique shape of the dome, which is raised by a high base and covered by a roof that corresponds to the main dome and secondary domes, and is colored gold, green, gray, etc. The shape and number of these crowns varies depending on the era and region. In the early days, there were many helmet-shaped crowns in the shape of ancient warriors, but in the 12th and 13th centuries, one crown symbolized the unity of Rus, and in the 16th century, five crowns became the norm, modeled after the churches in the Moscow Kremlin. From the end of the 15th century to the 17th century, this changed to the so-called onion-shaped (lukovitsa) crown.
[Russification of the Byzantine style]
This Russification was brought about by adapting the architecture to the local climate, by influences from traditional wooden architecture, regional characteristics, and symbolic meanings.
