...At first, most of the members were low-class peasants and craftsmen, but over time, the strict ethical principles were relaxed and many city dwellers and nobles joined. Around 1490, under the guidance of the Prague theologian Lukáš Pražský (c. 1458-1528), an independent church was established, and by the beginning of the 16th century, it had expanded to an organization with 100,000 members and 200 churches in various regions. In 1575, the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Bohemia, Maximilian II (reigned 1564-76), granted the church freedom of worship, and in 1609, Rudolf II (reigned 1576-1612) granted it complete religious freedom. ...
