NRF - La Nouvelle Revue Française

NRF - La Nouvelle Revue Française

A representative contemporary French monthly literary magazine. An abbreviation of "New French Review". It was launched in February 1909, with Gide, Copeau, Schlumberger, Geon, Luitters, and M. Arnaud as its members, breaking away from the framework of the established literary world. It was a small magazine with a circulation of less than 2,000 at first, but in 1913, it suddenly became the center of new literature by publishing works by young writers such as Alain Fournier, Martin du Gard, and Larbaud. After World War I, under J. Rivière as editor-in-chief until 1925, and then Paulhan as editor-in-chief, it became France's leading literary magazine in both name and reality, and it is no exaggeration to say that most of the French writers of the 20th century, including Sartre, were nurtured by this magazine. During World War II, even under German occupation, the magazine was published until June 1943 with Drue La Rochelle (who collaborated with the Nazis) as editor in chief, but because of this, its relaunch after the war was delayed, and in 1953 it reappeared under the name "New NRF" with Paulhan and Alran as editors in chief, and it was not until 1959 that the magazine reverted to its old name. Published by Gallimard Bookstore.
