In ancient times, they were a military tribe that was subordinate to the Otomo clan. In the story of the descent of the heavenly grandson in the Nihon Shoki, it is said that Amenooshihi no Mikoto, ancestor of the Otomo clan, led the Ameno Kushitsu Ookume, ancestor of the Kume clan, and in the story of Emperor Jimmu's eastern expedition, it is said that Hiomi no Mikoto, ancestor of the Otomo clan, led the Kume clan. In the same story, the Kojiki records the ancestors of the Otomo clan and Kume Nao as equals. It is presumed that the Kume clan was subordinate to the Otomo clan, and that from a certain point in time, Kume Nao was positioned under the Otomo clan as a tomo no tsukuri who directly ruled the Kume clan.

古代，大伴氏に隷属した軍事的部民。《日本書紀》の天孫降臨説話に大伴連（むらじ）の祖天忍日命（あめのおしひのみこと）が来目部の祖天槵津大来目（あめのくしつおおくめ）を率いたとあり，神武東征説話にも大伴氏の祖日臣命が大来目部を率いたとする。同じ話を《古事記》では大伴連と久米直の祖を対等に記している。来目部が大伴氏に隷属したこと，ある時期から来目部を直接統べた伴造として久米直が大伴連の下に位置したことが推定される。
