Mahmud Shah

In 1509, a Portuguese fleet led by Sequeira appeared in Malacca and requested permission to trade. King Mahmud Shah (reigned c. 1480-1511) initially granted permission, but after strong opposition from Indian and Islamic merchants, he changed his stance and launched a surprise attack on the Portuguese and Sequeira's fleet that had landed. Sequeira escaped, but in 1511 Albuquerque arrived with a fleet, attacked the royal palace, and occupied the city.
