Tales of the Handan Provinces - Simple Tales

Tales of the Handan Provinces - Simple Tales
A collection of 20 stories. Written by Ryutei Tanehiko (stories 1-8) and Kasatei Senka (stories 9-20). Illustrated by Utagawa Kunisada, Sadahide, and Kunisada II. Published 1834-56 (Tenpo 5-Ansei 3). The title "Tales of Various Provinces by Tanehiko" is often used on the cover, and the concept is modeled on the stories of various provinces written by Saikaku and Soki. The story is set in the provinces of Omi, Dewa, Yamato, and Harima (all written by Tanehiko), and then Ise, Totomi, and Settsu (all written by Senka), and is a collection of independent fantasy stories for each province, but the characters are organically related and connected to the plot. Tanehiko demonstrated his skill in adapting and arranging the Ukiyo-zoshi of Saikaku and Saki, and the Joruri of Chikamatsu, but Senka, which he succeeded after his death, was limited to imitating Tanehiko's works, following Saki's works, and adapting Kamigata Yomihon.
