Also known as Neotrigonia. A bivalve mollusk of the Trigonidae family. A remnant of the Trigonia genus, which flourished from the Devonian period of the Paleozoic to the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic, it is a "living fossil." It is distributed in the waters surrounding Australia and Tasmania and is classified into seven species, all of which are very similar. In 1801, a dead shell was discovered on the coast of Tasmania, indicating that it is still alive. The shell is a rounded rectangle that is somewhat inflated, and the surface is covered with a black-brown skin. It has about 20 radial ribs with joints, and the inside is silvery-white or purple with a strong pearlescent luster. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
