Primrose

Japanese: プリムローズ
Primrose
A Scottish viola player. A virtuoso performer who brought the viola, which was a rather modest instrument among string instruments, to the forefront as a solo instrument. He learned the violin in his hometown of Glasgow, and in 1925 studied under Ysaïe in Belgium. His teacher recommended him to switch to the viola. In addition to his solo career, he was active in chamber music with Heifetz and Feuermann, and from 1938 to 1942, he was selected by Toscanini to serve as principal viola in the NBC Symphony Orchestra. In his final years, he commissioned Bartók to write a Viola Concerto (premiered in 1949), contributing to the expansion of the viola repertoire. He settled in the United States in 1937 and obtained U.S. citizenship in 1955. He was also an excellent teacher, teaching at American universities and at the Tokyo University of the Arts from 1972 to 1974. →Bashmet/Fournier→Related topics NBC Symphony Orchestra
