Born: January 23, 1878 in Vinnitsa Died June 11, 1949. Ljubljana. Slovenian poet. Studied history and geography at the University of Vienna, and studied in Paris for a time. When Slovenia became part of the newly established Yugoslavia, he became director of the National Theatre in Ljubljana, and in 1938 was elected to the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. He began writing poetry as early as middle school, and was recognized in literary circles as a modernist poet. His collections of poems include Čaša opojnosti (1899), Čez plan (Across the Plains), and Zimzelen pod snegom (45). During World War II, his poems were a spiritual pillar of the anti-German resistance, and were loved by partisans.
