Also known as fennel (illustration). A perennial plant of the Apiaceae family. It grows to a height of 1-2m, with thin, thread-like, bright green, soft leaves. In summer, flower branches emerge from the top of the stem or from the base of the leaves at the top of the stem, and many small yellow flowers grow in an umbrella shape. The fruits are oblong, 7-10mm long, and grow in pairs on one stalk, with two flat surfaces facing each other. In autumn, the fruits ripen to a dark brown color, and the stems and leaves above ground wither if exposed to frost. Native to southern Europe and western Asia. It is now cultivated all over the world. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
