Nagatoshi Yamanaka

Nagatoshi Yamanaka
Year of death: December 24, 1608 (February 10, 1608)
Year of birth: Tenbun 16 (1547)
A military commander in the Sengoku period. The Yamanaka clan was a retainer of the Muromachi shogunate, based in Yamanakamura and Kashiwagi Mikuriya in Koga County, Omi (Shiga Prefecture). Nagatoshi's father, who was the deputy governor of Settsu-Kake County under Hosokawa Harumoto, is thought to have become a retainer of the Omi Rokkaku clan after Harumoto's downfall. In 1573, after being attacked by Oda Nobunaga, he helped Rokkaku Shosada (Yoshikata), who had holed up in Ishibe Castle, escape to Shigaraki, and Nagatoshi, who continued to follow the Rokkaku clan, whose power had declined, was dismissed by Shosada out of consideration for him. After serving Shibata Katsuie and Niwa Nagahide, he was summoned by Toyotomi Hideyoshi, where he served as a solicitor and right-hand man. In 1593, he became the governor of Yamashiro Province. He became the deputy governor of Echizen Kitabukuro Silver Mine and other areas, and in the following year, he was given 10,000 koku of rice. He wrote Chugoku Nihon Jiranki (Record of the Warring of Japanese Clan in the Middle Ages) at Hideyoshi's command. During the Battle of Sekigahara, he was on the side of Mitsunari Ishida, but was later pardoned and became a member of Ieyasu Tokugawa's vassals.
