A group of fungi that are considered phycomycetes. Among them, Amoebidium attaches itself to the body surface of chironomid larvae, but all the others attach themselves to specific locations in the intestines of arthropods, and utilize food that passes through the intestines after it has been digested to a certain extent. They have very unique ecologies: Enterobryus attaches itself to the hindgut of millipedes, Harpella to the midgut of blackfly larvae, Stachylina to the midgut of chironomids, Smittium to the terminal hindgut of mosquito larvae, and Enteromyces to the foregut of red crabs. They multiply by arthrospores, and those known to reproduce sexually produce zygotes with unusual morphology.
