In particular, in the late Middle Ages, the conflicts between these local feudal domains became intertwined with the struggles between the French and English kings, making the situation particularly complicated. Gaston Phoebus (1331-91), who ruled over Foix and Béarn, established a virtually independent kingdom in the Pyrenees region through his powerful military force and clever balancing policy. He was also a legendary figure, skilled in both the literary and military arts, and a typical example of the great feudal lords of the era.
