[Born] 1825 [Died] 1889 French journalist. His main work, L'Esthétique (1878), was a book of positivist tendencies. Tolstoy praised its clear arguments, and in Japan Nakae Chomin wrote about it in his book Ishi Aesthetics (1883-84), and Tsubouchi Shoyo also mentioned it, playing an enlightening role in the artistic thought of the Meiji period.
