… In the nationalism that followed after 1848, the subjects of painting came to be the history, folklore, and daily life of Bohemia and Moravia. The most representative painters were Josef Mánes (1810/20-71), Jaroslav Čermák (1830-78) and Aleš, who painted historical scenes, and Antonín Chittussi (1847-91), who painted landscapes. The decoration of the National Theatre in Prague in 1879 was the culmination of this movement, and Aleš, Vojtěch Hynais (1854-1925), Julius Mařák (1832-99), and other artists were involved. These painters are known as the National Theatre School. …
