Colossendeis colossea (English name: Colossendeis colossea)

Class: Pycnogonidae, Order: Pycnogonidae, Family: Pycnogonidae. This is the largest species of sea spider, with a body length including snout of 9cm and a walking leg length of 35cm. The body is bright red, and the walking legs become more yellowish towards the tips. Distributed worldwide, it has been recorded from muddy bottoms at depths of 850-4150m, and in Japanese waters from Suruga Bay to the coast of the Kii Peninsula at depths of 1200-1600m. It has four eyes set in low eye caruncle, but lacks pigment, likely because it is a deep-sea species. There are several closely related species.

ウミグモ綱ウミグモ目オオウミグモ科。ウミグモ類中の最大種で，吻を加えた体長 9cm，歩脚長 35cmに達する。体は鮮紅色で，歩行肢は先端に近づくほど黄色みを増す。世界的に分布し，水深 850～4150mの泥底から記録されており，日本近海では駿河湾から紀伊半島沿岸にかけて水深 1200～1600mから得られている。低い眼丘に4眼をもつが，深海性種であるためか色素を欠く。近縁種が数種ある。
