The family was a chieftain of the Ulster region of Ireland. They had been royal families of the region in the past, but in 1315, when Edward Bruce, the younger brother of Robert I the Bruce, King of Scotland, occupied the region by force and proclaimed himself King of Ireland, the royal name O'Neill was taken away. They had been in conflict with the O'Donnell family and others for a long time, which was useful for England's colonial policy, but when England's military colonial policy in Ulster was strengthened in the 16th century, they received the title of Earl of Tyrone, but made peace with the O'Donnell family, and Con O'Neill, Shane O'Neill, Hugh O'Neill, Owen Law O'Neill and others successively sought independence from England and rebelled under the ancient name O'Neill, but all of them failed.
