Amakusakurage - Amakusakurage

This jellyfish belongs to the phylum Coelenterata, class Scyphomedusa, order Entagastromedusa, family Oxymedidae. Its entire color is pale purple or yellow. The umbrella is relatively flat, 6-10 cm in diameter, with many nematocysts arranged radially on the outer surface of the umbrella. The umbrella edge is divided into 32 lobes, with 16 sensory organs and 16 long tentacles arranged alternately. There are four long mouth edges, with a cross-shaped opening at the center of their base. This species is tropical, but can be found in Japan from central to southern Honshu, and is abundant around Amakusa in Kyushu around August. The tentacles contain strong venom from the nematocysts, which causes severe pain when touched.

腔腸(こうちょう)動物門ハチクラゲ綱旗口(はたくち)クラゲ目オキクラゲ科に属するクラゲ。全体は淡紫紅色あるいは黄色。傘は比較的扁平(へんぺい)で、直径6～10センチメートル、傘の外表面には多くの刺胞(しほう)群が放射状に並んでいる。傘縁は32葉に分かれ、16個の感覚器と16本の長い触手とが交互に存在する。口縁は4個で長く、その基部中央に十字状の口を開いている。本種は熱帯性であるが日本では本州中部以南にみられ、九州の天草付近では8月ごろに多産する。触手に強い刺胞毒があり、触れると強い痛みを感ずる。
