Asymptote

If there is a plane curve F(x,y)=0, and a moving point P moves infinitely farther from the origin along the curve, if there exists a constant line whose distance from P is infinitesimal, this line is called the asymptote of the curve. Examples of curves with asymptote include hyperbolas and Cartesian lobes. Asymptote can also be considered when the curve is given in polar coordinates, rather than in Cartesian coordinates, in the form F(r,θ)=0. This is the case of a conchoid.

Let the equation of the asymptote be y=mx+b. As the points move infinitely farther along the curve,

Conversely, if there are such values of m and b, then y=mx+b is the asymptote of this curve. Here, lim represents the limit value calculated using the x and y coordinates of a point on the curve when the point is moved infinitely far along the curve.
