〘Noun〙 A pass for passing through a checkpoint as stipulated by the Ritsuryo system. Two were given to each of the three checkpoint provinces (Suzuka Barrier in Ise Province, Fuwa Barrier in Mino Province, and Aibatsu Barrier in Echizen Province) and were used when an army of 20 or more people passed through a checkpoint. Later, for ceremonies, a wooden mock pass was made for a ceremony, and split into two pieces, each piece being shared between the Imperial Court and the three checkpoint provinces, to create a wooden mokkei (wooden certificate) .
