A Cushitic ethnic group found widely in Somalia, northern Kenya, and southern Ethiopia. The population is estimated at about 8 million. They converted to Islam early on, and their livelihood is camel, goat, and sheep farming, with the exception of some farming, fishing, and trade in coastal areas. They have a strong sense of belonging to patrilineal kinship groups and sub-clan clans, and there are also warrior groups organized by age.
