A Kabuki play. A domestic drama. Seven acts. Written by Kawatake Mokuami. Commonly known as "Kaga Tobi." It was first performed in March 1886 (Meiji 19) at the Chitose-za Theatre in Tokyo by Onoe Kikugoro V and others. It is based on a fight that took place during the Kyowa era (1801-04) between the feudal fire brigade Kaga Tobi employed by Lord Maeda of Kaga in Hongo and the town fire brigade of Shitaya in Asakusa, and interweaves the evil deeds of the masseur Dogen. Osuga, the wife of Umeyoshi, the head of the Kaga Tobi clan, is accused of adultery by his subordinate Goroji, who is also his subordinate, and is sent to the care of his elder brother Matsuzo, but she is relieved when Goroji, threatened by the Grim Reaper, changes his mind and she is saved. Dogen, a masseuse living in a tenement for the blind, conspires with his mistress Okane to blackmail the pawn shop Iseya, where his niece Oasa works, by making up accusations. However, Matsuzo, who had once killed someone in Ochanomizu and stole their money, confronts them with the tobacco case that he dropped at the scene, and they retreat. Later, their crimes are exposed and they are arrested in front of Akamon Gate. At the premiere, Kikugorou V played the three roles of Umeyoshi, Dogen and Shinigami and was well received, but later Kikugorou VI showed exquisite acting skills especially in the role of Dogen, so Dogen's storyline was often performed separately. However, the scene where the Kaga roofers gather in front of the gate, in which Umeyoshi stops them from starting a fight with the town fire brigade, is usually performed in addition to Dogen's storyline, because the roofer's customs are unusual and spectacular. In recent years, Onoe Matsuroku II and Nakamura Kanzaburo 17th have excelled in this role.
