Kuruma Plant Group

Japanese: 来馬植物群 - くるましょくぶつぐん

A general term for fossil plants found in the Lower Jurassic Kuruma Group (approximately 170 million years ago), which is distributed in the mountainous region spanning the three prefectures of Nagano, Niigata, and Toyama. Various fossils of horsetails, ferns, cycads, ginkgo trees, and cones are beautifully preserved here. The composition of the Kuruma Flora is quite different from that of the Late Triassic flora (the Omine and Nariwa Flora in Japan), with fewer ferns of the Acanthaceae family and the appearance of new forms of Bennettites, but it is very similar to the composition of the Xiangxi Flora of the same period, which is widely distributed along the Yangtze River in mainland China.

長野，新潟，富山の3県にまたがる山岳地帯に分布する下部ジュラ系来馬層群(およそ1億7000万年前)とよばれる地層中に含まれている化石植物の総称。各種のトクサ，シダ，ソテツ葉類，イチョウ，球果類の化石がみごとに保存されている。来馬植物群は，三畳紀後期の植物群(日本では大嶺･成羽両植物群)とくらべ，ヤブレガサウラボシ科のシダが少なくなり，新しい形のベネチテス類が出現するなど，その組成はかなり異なり，中国大陸の長江(揚子江)沿いに広く分布する同時期の香渓植物群の組成によく似ている。
