Outdoor activities

Outdoor activities are activities that involve disciplined communal living and various group activities such as camping, hiking, cycling, orienteering, skiing, skating, mountain climbing, swimming, collecting plants and insects, and farm work, mainly for young people, planned and implemented by schools and social education organizations. School trips and seaside schools are also considered to be a type of outdoor activities. More and more schools are incorporating outdoor activities into their school trip itineraries. Outdoor activities have many educational values, such as training the mind and body of young people and cultivating a group spirit. In particular, considering the current state of Japanese society, where nature is rapidly disappearing from urban areas due to the progress of urbanization, it is extremely meaningful for young people to come into contact with nature and cultivate a fresh mind. However, outdoor activities tend to be dangerous, so appropriate advance planning and having a leader are essential conditions.

豊かな自然環境のなかで、規律ある共同生活や、キャンプ、ハイキング、サイクリング、オリエンテーリング、スキー、スケート、登山、水泳、植物・昆虫採集、農作業などの各種の活動を集団で行うこと。主として青少年を対象に、学校や社会教育団体が計画、実施するものをいう。林間学校や臨海学校もこの一種と考えられる。修学旅行の日程のなかにこれを組み入れる学校の例なども増えている。野外活動には、青少年の心身を鍛錬し、集団精神を培うなどの、多くの教育的価値が認められる。ことに、都市化の進展に伴って、都会地から急速に自然が失われつつある日本の社会の現状を考えると、青少年が自然に触れて清新の気を養うことは、そのことだけでもきわめて有意義である。ただ、野外活動には危険が伴いがちなので、適切な事前計画や、指導者に人を得ることなどは欠かせない条件だといえよう。
