...By the second half of the 17th century, the treble, tenor, and other instruments had been completely replaced by the violin, but the bass viamba, with its wide range, unique tone, and other expressive power, continued to be used until the second half of the 18th century. The great Baroque composers Buxtehude, JS Bach, Handel, Telemann, Couperin, as well as French performers Marin Marais (1656-1728), Antoine Forqueray (c. 1671-1745) and his son Jean-Baptiste Antoine F. (1699-1782), and the Dutch Johannes Schenck (c. 1660-1712) left behind many works that were unique to the gamba and could not be substituted by other instruments (JS Bach's "Three Gamba Sonatas" (BWV1027-29), "St. Matthew Passion," Marais's "The Tomb of Monsieur Lully," and five volumes of "Viol Music" (1686-1725) containing about 600 pieces).
