Naval Training School - Kaigunsourenjo

(1) A naval educational institution of the Edo Shogunate at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate period. It was opened in Kobe in May 1864 (Genji 1). The Nagasaki Ironworks was also attached to it, and Katsu Kaishu, the Magistrate of Warships, was in charge of overall management. Using two ships, the Kanko Maru and the Kokuryu Maru, the school enrolled the children of samurai and retainers living in Kyoto and Osaka, as well as volunteers from the western domains of the country. However, at the end of the same year, Katsu was recalled to Edo and dismissed on suspicion of training radicals, and the school was abolished in March 1865 (Genji 2). Sakamoto Ryoma (Tosa), Yokoi Saheita (Kumamoto), and Mutsu Munemitsu (Kishu) were among those who studied here.

(2) A training institution for naval officers in the early Meiji period. It was the predecessor of the Naval Academy. It was founded in September 1869 (Meiji 2) on the former site of the Hiroshima Domain residence in Tsukiji, Tokyo. Instructors included Kondo Makoto (Hōrin), Tanaka Daisuke (Yoshikazu), and Motoyama Zenkichi, and students were 18 to 20 years old and were tribute students from each domain. There was no uniform, and most students wore haori and hakama, swords, sandals, and had their hair tied up. In November 1870, it was renamed the Naval Academy, and Hyobu Daijō Kawamura Sumiyoshi became the head of the military academy. In 1876, it became the Naval Academy.
