A district in the southwest of Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo. Formerly Koishikawa Ward, it occupied the western half of present-day Bunkyo Ward. The river that flows between Hongo-dai and Toshima-dai (Otsuka-dai and Kobinata/Kohinata-dai) is also written as 'Sekigawa', and the place name comes from the fact that it was a river with many pebbles. The river is now a culvert, and even its existence is unclear. During the Edo period, the plateau was covered with large fields, with samurai residences, temples, and houses scattered about. The current Koishikawa district developed into a school and residential area after the Meiji period, and publishing and printing businesses are concentrated in the old Koishikawa valley. In addition to Denzuin, there are many temples. [Kiyoshi Sawada] [Reference item] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
