...Saxon and others began to incorporate electric instruments and complex rhythms into their group activities. Outside of the Miles group, the talented musician Quincy D. Jones (1933- ) was inspired by this and found a new direction in rhythm-based performance, pioneering a type of popular music with a strong black influence that would later be called "black contemporary music." This new "jazz," collectively called "fusion," made widespread appeal by incorporating a large amount of black rhythmic sensibility and blending electric and acoustic (non-electric) instruments with a focus on 8-beat and 16-beat rhythms, but it would inevitably become stale unless there was some major innovation.
