…After this, many Romanist painters appeared who studied in Italy, especially Rome, and tried to absorb the achievements of antiquity and the Renaissance. However, generally speaking, 16th-century Dutch art, centered around them, was unable to fully express either the idealism of Italy or the realism of the Netherlands, and failed to achieve the important task of integrating the two. Among the painters who were able to establish their own individuality in this environment are Anthony Mor(o) van Dashorst (1512-76), who was active in the courts of various countries, mainly Spain, and established a model for official portraits, and Aertsen, who dealt with religious themes but paved the way for 17th-century Flanders with his vivid depictions of manners and customs. In the second half of the 16th century, artistic activity was generally sluggish due to religious and political unrest, and many works were lost during this period due to the iconoclasm. …
