King of Kado

Japanese: 葛野王 - かどのおう
King of Kado
Year of death: Keiun 2.12.20 (706.1.9)
Year of birth: Tenchi 8 (669)
He was a member of the imperial family and a man of letters during the Nara period. He was the grandson of Emperor Tenchi and the eldest son of Prince Otomo. His mother was Princess Juichi, daughter of Emperor Tenmu. Two poems remain in the "Kaifuso". He is said to have enjoyed learning, loved writing, and was also good at painting. After Prince Takaichi died in the 10th year of the reign of Jitō (696), Empress Jitō consulted her ministers on the successor, and the debate became heated. At that time, the king stated that the throne should be passed on to a direct descendant, and it is said that he put an end to the debate by making a statement that implicitly suggested that Mommu be made crown prince. As an official, he served as Minister of Jibu and Minister of Ceremonies. At the time of his death, he was ranked as Junior Fourth Rank Upper, and his son Prince Ikebe and grandson Omi Mifune were his grandsons. <References> Toshio Araki, "Ancient Japanese Crown Princes"
