Owada no Tomari - Owada no Tomari

Japanese:
Owada no Tomari - Owada no Tomari

An ancient port located within the current Kobe Port in Hyogo Prefecture. A natural harbor sheltered from wind and waves in the shadow of Wadamisaki, it was known as one of the "Five Harbors" along with Kawajiri, Uozumi, Kara, and Muro, and is said to have been built by Gyoki. In the early Heian period, the Owada Funaseshi was stationed here, and improvements were made, such as the construction of Iwakura. Taira no Kiyomori, who had a side business in the nearby Fukuhara, placed importance on the port, and built Kyogashima to work on the construction of the port. It developed into one of the most important ports in the inland sea, with Song ships entering the port. After the fall of the Taira clan, Chogen, the chief monk of Todaiji Temple, took over the business and carried out repairs. Since the Kamakura period, the place has been called Hyogojima and Hyogotsu.
