...Their forces, mainly from Zanj, twice invaded Ahwaz and briefly occupied Wasit in central Iraq. At the time, the Abbasid Caliphate was dominated by the Mamluks, and there was constant conflict and strife between the warlords, leading to a state of near anarchy. However, things started to improve when the caliph's brother, general al-Muwaffaq (?-891), took control of the country. Muwaffaq personally led an army against the rebels, gradually driving them into a corner, and the rebellion ended with the fall of the capital, Mukhtala, and the death of Ali.
