Ogino Dokuon

Japanese: 荻野独園 - おぎのどくおん

1819-1895 A monk from the late Edo to Meiji period.
Born in June 1829. A Rinzai sect priest. He studied Confucianism under Hoashi Banri. He studied under Daisetsu Joen at Shokoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and became the temple's chief priest in 1870. In 1872, he was appointed head of the joint Shinto-Buddhist Daikyoin, and also served as the head priest of the three sects of Rinzai, Soto, and Obaku. He passed away on August 10, 1895, at the age of 77. He was from Bizen (Okayama Prefecture). His Buddhist name was Shoju and his pen name was Taikoan. His works include "Kinsei Zenrin Sohoden" and "Taiko Goroku."

文政2年6月生まれ。臨済(りんざい)宗。帆足万里(ほあし-ばんり)に儒学をまなぶ。京都相国寺の大拙承演(だいせつ-じょうえん)に師事して明治3年同寺住職となる。5年神仏合同の大教院院長に就任し,臨済,曹洞(そうとう),黄檗(おうばく)3宗の総管長をかねた。明治28年8月10日死去。77歳。備前(岡山県)出身。法名は承珠。号は退耕庵。著作に「近世禅林僧宝伝」「退耕語録」など。
