Born in June 1829. A Rinzai sect priest. He studied Confucianism under Hoashi Banri. He studied under Daisetsu Joen at Shokoku-ji Temple in Kyoto, and became the temple's chief priest in 1870. In 1872, he was appointed head of the joint Shinto-Buddhist Daikyoin, and also served as the head priest of the three sects of Rinzai, Soto, and Obaku. He passed away on August 10, 1895, at the age of 77. He was from Bizen (Okayama Prefecture). His Buddhist name was Shoju and his pen name was Taikoan.
