Strychnine

Also called strychnine. C 21 H 22 N 2 O 2 (334.41). An indole alkaloid found in the seeds of Strychnos nux-vomica (Buddhistaceae). It is obtained together with its dimethoxy derivative brucine. Melting point 268°C. -139° (chloroform). 1.36. p K a1 8.0, p K a2 2.3 (20°C). UVλ max 254, 278, 288 nm (log ε 4.10, 3.63, 3.53 ethanol). Slightly soluble in water, ether, and cold ethanol. A highly poisonous substance that stimulates and excites the central nervous system. It can also cause characteristic rigid convulsions and lead to death. The lethal dose for humans is 30-100 mg. It is used as a nerve stimulant to aid in recovery from illness and to treat digestive dysfunction. [CAS 57-24-9]
