During the time of Saman Khudā (year of birth and death unknown), a member of the Iranian landlord (difkan) class who lived in the Balkh region south of the Amu Darya, he accepted Islam (late 8th century), and during the time of his grandsons (early 9th century), he was given control of Samarkand, Fergana, Tashkent, and Herat because of his loyalty to the Abbasid Caliphate. In 875, Amir Nasr bin Ahmad (reigned 875-892) was given control of the entire region of Mawar al-annahr by the Abbasid caliph, and established a de facto independent state.
