1894‐1953 Polish poet. Born in Lodz to a Jewish banker. A member of the influential group of poets known as Skamander after World War I, he wrote about urban customs in everyday language in his early days, but he gradually became disillusioned with society and published satirical poems such as Ball at the Opera House (1936). His passion for language exploration bore fruit in works such as the unique Green (1936). He also wrote a major work, Flowers of Poland (1949), during his time in exile in France and America. His work, including translating Russian literature and compiling anthologies of poems, is also not to be missed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
