Windlass - Windlass (English spelling)
Also called an anchor windlass, this deck machine is used to pull up anchors, and is usually installed on the bow deck. There are manual types for very small anchors weighing around 60 kg, but all large ships are powered. It has a winding wheel with a chain groove of the shape and size that the anchor chain fits into, and the chain is wound up by rotating this with a gear, and the wound up anchor chain is lowered into the anchor chain storehouse. When dropping the anchor, the clutch is released and the winding wheel is allowed to spin freely, using the anchor's own weight. In addition, rope reeling drums are usually attached to both ends of the winding wheel, which are also used to wind up the mooring rope.
