…The capital of Sverdlovsk Oblast, the westernmost region of Siberia, Russia. Population 1,371,000 (1992). Located on the eastern slope of the central Ural Mountains, it is the industrial and cultural center of the Ural region and a key transportation hub. In 1723, a metallurgical plant and a fortress were established here, and it was named after Catherine the Great, but in 1924 it was renamed Sverdlovsk in honor of the revolutionary Sverdlov. In 1991, it was renamed to its current name. After the revolution, the deposed Tsar Nicholas II and his family were shot here in July 1918. Currently, the mechanical and chemical industries are thriving, and there are many higher education institutions, theaters, museums, etc., including the Ural Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation. …

…ロシア連邦,シベリア最西部のスベルドロフスク州の州都。人口137万1000(1992)。ウラル山脈中部の東斜面に位置し,ウラル地方の工業・文化の中心地で交通の要衝。1723年に冶金工場と要塞が設けられ,エカチェリナ1世にちなんで名づけられたが,1924年に革命家スベルドロフを記念してスベルドロフスクと改称。91年現名に改称。革命後,廃帝ニコライ2世が家族とともに1918年7月,この地で銃殺された。現在,機械工業,化学工業が盛んで,またロシア連邦科学アカデミー・ウラル支部のほか高等教育機関,劇場,博物館など多数がある。…
