A city in central Toyama Prefecture. Established as a city in 1889. Prefectural capital. Occupying the main part of the Toyama Plain along the Jinzu River and the Jōganji River, as well as the northern part of the Hida Highlands, it faces Toyama Bay. The city center is on the right bank of the downstream Jinzu River. It developed as a castle town after the construction of Toyama Castle by Mizuno Katsushige in 1532, and during the Edo period it was the castle town of the Kaga Maeda clan branch. It was destroyed in air raids during World War II but was rebuilt. It is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Takayama Main Line, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Toyama Chiho Railway Lines, Toyama Light Rail, and the Hokuriku Expressway, and is home to Toyama Airport, which was converted to jet air and opened in 1984. It is one of the centers of the Toyama Takaoka New Industrial City, designated in 1964, and large chemical and heavy industry factories are concentrated along the coast of Fushiki Toyama Port, a designated important port, as well as many traditional Toyama medicine factories. The city's manufacturing shipments totaled 1,045.3 billion yen (2003), ranking first in the prefecture. In 1984, it was designated Toyama Technopolis, and the high-tech industry is thriving. It is the gateway to the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route, and in the east, it is home to Arimine Dam and the source of the Kurobe River, and is part of Chubu Sangaku National Park. In the west, Mt. Kureha is a tourist destination, and Iwasehama and Yaesuhama are swimming beaches. Toyama University is located here. In April 2005, Osawano-cho and Daisen-cho in Kamishinkawa-gun, and Yao-cho, Funauka-cho, Yamada-mura, and Hosoiri-mura in Fushiki-gun were incorporated into the city. Area: 1,241.77 km2 .
