The insecticides that have been used up to now can be classified according to their chemical structure as shown in the table below. Of these insecticides, organochlorine insecticides such as DDT, γ-BHC, and drins were widely used for over twenty years after World War II as inexpensive and highly effective insecticides, but due to the risk of chronic toxicity due to their residual nature, most of them have now been discontinued or removed from registration. On the other hand, TEPP and parathion, which were first developed as organophosphate insecticides, were highly acutely toxic and were considered dangerous insecticides regardless of their effectiveness, but subsequent research and development has led to the discovery of many low-toxicity congeners, such as malathion, MEP, and diazinon, and these are now widely used as major insecticides along with carbamate insecticides.

　現在までに用いられてきた殺虫剤を化学構造から分類すると表のとおりである。これら殺虫剤のうちDDT,γ‐BHC，ドリン剤などの有機塩素系殺虫剤は，安価でしかもたいへん有効な殺虫剤として，第2次大戦後二十数年間にわたって多用されたが，その残留性による慢性毒性の危険から，現在では大部分が製造停止，あるいは登録からはずされている。一方，有機リン酸エステル系殺虫剤として最初に開発されたTEPP，パラチオンなどは，急性毒性が強く，その有効性にかかわらず危険な殺虫剤と考えられていたが，その後の開発研究によって，低毒性の同族体，例えばマラソン，MEP，ダイアジノンなど多数が見いだされ，現在ではカーバメート系殺虫剤とともに，主要な殺虫剤として広く使用されている。…
