A regional brand of Tottori prefecture, Chugoku region. The main production areas are Aoya-cho and Saji-cho in Tottori City. Inshu washi has a long history, and the Engishiki, a record from the Heian period, states that it was presented to the Imperial Court from Inaba Province. In the Edo period, it was actively produced with the aim of becoming self-sufficient in paper for use in official domain business. During the Meiji and Taisho periods, new production techniques were introduced, improving productivity. After the war, mainstay products such as shoji paper were hit hard by the rise of office machines and changes in lifestyle, and new products were developed, including calligraphy paper such as gasenshi paper, craft paper, and dyed paper. It boasts the largest production of calligraphy paper in Japan. In May 1975, it was designated a national traditional craft by the Minister of International Trade and Industry (now the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry).
