Kususan (Camphor silkworm) - Kususan (English spelling) Dictyoploca japonica
An insect of the Lepidoptera family, Saturniidae (illustration). It is commonly found throughout Japan, and in some areas it is called Shiragataro because its larvae are covered with long white hairs. It is a large moth with a wingspan of about 10 cm. It parasitizes a great many plants, including oak, konara oak, cherry, plum, peach, apple, pear, persimmon, and sumac, and can also appear on ginkgo trees, which are not prone to other pests. It is also called chestnut caterpillar because it often appears in chestnut forests. The eggs laid in a compacted state on the trunks hatch in the spring and go through seven instars, then make a hard, oval, mesh-like cocoon in early summer to pupate.
